What to Put in the Trunk and More!

  • Why is camp important for kids today?

Children today often do not have enough opportunities to play, explore and take risks like past generations. Summer camp, whether it’s overnight camp or day camp, provides children with a chance to explore the world and take risks in a controlled and nurturing setting. Kids can develop independence and experience things that they may not be able to experience at home.

  • How do I get my child ready for camp?

Share stories about your camp experiences. Involve them in shopping for camp, and let them help with the packing. Kids should connect with camp by reading through the information, watching the DVD or talking to the counselors ahead of time. Acknowledge the possibility of homesickness and talk about how to deal with that—write letters, email home, etc. Have your kids sleep over at a friends or relatives house so this won’t be their first time away from home.

  • When is the best time to shop for camp items?

Don’t wait until the week before camp to shop for all the items on your list, which we know is very long. Once you receive the list from your camp, start getting organized and shopping right away so you’re not frantic the week before. We have all the clothing items you need for camp—everything from swimwear to outerwear and all the essentials in between.

  • Why do I need to pack so many pairs of socks and underwear?

Your kids will be doing a lot of outdoor activities. With all that outdoor fun comes sweaty and dirty feet. Socks are important to keep feet and legs dry and protected from outdoor critters, twigs or poison ivy. Underwear can be lost in the shuffle between swim, showers and drying off. It's better to have too many than too little clean underwear.

  • What’s the best way to keep track of everything?

Label it! Our Fabric Marker works perfectly for labeling all your clothing. Sticky labels with your kids’ names should also be used for everything. Everything, even the underwear.

  • My kids will be swimming a lot! How do I ensure they are protected from the sun?

All of our rashguards (full, top and bottoms) have UPF 50 which gives 98% protection from UV rays. This is a great option if your kids plan to be in the water all day. Always make sure your kids have plenty of sunscreen packed for camp.

  • How do I prepare for the different types of weather during camp weeks?

Most overnight camps and even day camps assume your child will be ready for anything, despite the weather. Please remember to prepare your kids with enough layers, hats, rain gear and sweatshirts to keep them ready for any adventure—rain or heat wave.

  • What about outerwear?

Weather can be unpredictable, even in the summertime. We believe there is no such thing as bad weather if you have the right clothing. If your child’s camp is long enough, rain will inevitably find him or her. Make sure they are prepared with a light-weight rain jacket, such as our new Light Shell Style Windbreaker. Combine with a hoodie, sweatshirt or a fleece and your child will be ready for anything.
